Inclusive citizenship education: The role of teacher education

Alongside a shrinking civic space, democracy is in long-term decline in Europe due to polarisation, conflict, populism or authoritarianism. Curriculum reforms are increasingly moving away from a participatory concept of democracy that encourages critical thinking and values plurality.

The Lifelong Learning community in particular must take this seriously and contribute to democratic resilience through citizenship education. In this regard, teacher education and the provision of training of pedagogical professionals offered by civil society organisations is key.
