Professional Learning Artificial Intelligence is rapidly redefining education and, with it, the professional roles and competences of teachers. AI-supported tools are increasingly used for lesson planning, assessment, feedback, communication, resource development and personalised learning. As their presence in education expands, AI literacy is becoming an essential dimension of teachers’ continuous vocational development. Yet this transformation isn’t equally accessible to all educators. Differences in digital competence, confidence, institutional support, workload, access to training and opportunities for experimentation may create new forms of professional inequality.
The challenge, therefore, is not simply to prepare teachers to use AI, but to ensure that AI-related upskilling is inclusive, meaningful and sustainable. The emerging digital divide concerns not only access to technology, but also unequal opportunities to acquire the knowledge, confidence and critical competences required to use AI responsibly.
